Flexible Spending Accounts
The Department of Energy
has adopted the Federal Flexible Benefits Plan ("FedFlex"), meaning that you
can elect to participate in the Federal Flexible Spending Accounts Program (FSAFEDS).
FSAFEDS offers two different flexible spending accounts (FSAs): a health care
flexible spending account, and a dependent care flexible spending account. Both involve
putting money into the account(s) using pre-tax contributions. Then, as you incur out of
pocket health care and/or dependent care expenses, you receive reimbursements from your
FSAs.
Enrollment in the FSA Program is during open season each year at the same time as the
Federal Employees Health Benefits Program open season (the November/December timeframe)
during which you can enroll in an FSA for the following year.
New and newly eligible employees have 60 days after their entry on duty to enroll in this program.
